About Baby Bee: the story & founder behind the Family Play Lounge
The story behind Baby Bee.
How a question asked in Düsseldorf in 2020 became the first Baby Bee play space, and why we still believe in free play and real connection today.

Founded by families, for families.
Why Baby Bee exists
We knew there had to be another way.
How a question asked in Düsseldorf in 2020 became the first Baby Bee play space, and why we still believe in free play and real connection today.
Out of these questions grew a mindful place that gives children more room, where families can arrive together and children and adults meet as equals.
WE DIDN'T WANT MORE FOR CHILDREN.
WE WANTED SOMETHING DIFFERENT, FOR KIDS AND PARENTS.
How the first Baby Bee play space in Düsseldorf came about
From an idea to a place.
Baby Bee started with a simple question: what would a place look like where children can explore freely and families truly feel at home?
A defining moment was a visit to a typical indoor playground with our daughter, who was one at the time. We'd been looking forward to watching her walk and explore. But within minutes she was so overwhelmed by the noise, stimuli and impressions that her curiosity turned into pure overload.
During our parental leave we travelled a lot, visited different facilities and concepts as an international family, talked to experts and immersed ourselves in Montessori, Pikler and Waldorf education. At the same time, we looked closely at research on free play, child-led development, attachment, self-efficacy and how environment shapes children's learning.
Fewer stimuli. Fewer rules. Less programme.
More calm. More quality. More self-determination. More room for the child.
In 2020, this led to the first Baby Bee play space opening in Düsseldorf. Families came back, recommended us to others
and made Baby Bee a place that had clearly been missing from family life.
How Baby Bee grew: from the first play space to several locations
From one space to something bigger.
One place became several. An idea became a growing concept that partners now carry forward in new places.
Our goal was never simply to replicate a finished structure. We want to find people who share the same values while bringing their own experience, creativity and perspective.
People who think Baby Bee further with us.
Today we keep developing Baby Bee step by step, with new locations, selected products and
ideas that carry free play and connection beyond our spaces into everyday family life.
THE SPACE WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
What we believe in: childhood, free play and the future
The world is changing. Children still need room to become themselves.
Technology, digitalisation and artificial intelligence are changing how we work, learn and live. That's exactly why we believe children today don't need even more acceleration. They need spaces where they can stay curious, develop their own ideas, try things out, repeat, resolve conflicts and make their own decisions.
SELF-EFFICACY. CREATIVITY. ADAPTABILITY. CONNECTION.
INDEPENDENT THINKING.
For us, being ready for the future doesn't start at school. It starts much earlier, in real experiences. Free play creates exactly that space: children observe, negotiate, decide, change their ideas and create something that wasn't there before.
We believe in environments that give orientation without prescribing the path. In relationships that give security without controlling development. And in family places that are allowed to feel human.
A place where childhood doesn't need to be optimised.
It just gets to happen.

Raising Future Humans: thoughts on childhood and the future
The questions behind Baby Bee don't end here.
Many of the questions that led to Baby Bee are still on my mind today: how do we prepare children for a world we don't know ourselves yet? Which skills will really count? And how do we create spaces where children don't just learn to adapt, but experience that they can shape things themselves?
On Raising Future Humans, I share thoughts, questions, experiences and ideas as a mother & founder on childhood, the future, human potential and the world our children are growing into.
If these topics are on your mind too, if you have ideas or would like to think along or work together: let's connect.
